Specifying a Custom-Cut Solid Brass or 304 Stainless Range Backsplash (30", 36", 44" & Outlet Cutouts)
Historic plaster walls, inset face-frame cabinets, and tiled alcoves rarely measure a true 30.00" or 36.00" behind a range, and field-cutting electrical boxes into heavy sheet metal kinks the face. This specification covers three-point width measurement, NEC single-gang and two-gang wallplate tolerances, high-temperature adhesive mounting, and C260 brass vs. 304 stainless performance.

Measuring Tapered Plaster Alcoves & Non-Standard Hood Widths
Older kitchens frequently settle out of plumb: upper cabinet face frames or tiled returns beside a 30-inch or 36-inch range often vary by 1/8" to 1/4" between the countertop and the underside of the range hood, leaving clear openings such as 29-3/4" or 35-7/8".
Take three horizontal tape measurements (at the countertop surface Y = 0", at mid-wall Y = 12", and directly beneath the hood or upper trim), then subtract 1/16" to 1/8" from the narrowest reading. That relief lets a rigid 16-gauge (0.063") solid brass or 304 stainless sheet slide straight into place without gouging adjacent cabinet paint, leaving a hairline 1/32" to 1/16" perimeter joint that can sit crisp and dry or take a micro-bead of color-matched silicone.
High-Temperature Silicone Adhesive vs. #8 Corner Screw Mounting
Unlike 22-gauge or 24-gauge hardware sheet that ripples ("oil-cans") over wavy horsehair plaster, 16-gauge (0.063") architectural sheet has sufficient flat-plate mass (13.1 lbs in 304 stainless or 13.9 lbs in solid brass for a 30" × 24" panel, and up to 21.9 lbs for a 42" × 27" brass panel) to bridge minor wall undulations smoothly. Choose between two mounting configurations in the customizer based on substrate and future serviceability.
- Unpierced Sheet + High-Temp Neutral-Cure Silicone
- Apply vertical beads of 100% neutral-cure RTV high-temperature silicone (rated 400°F–500°F behind high-BTU rear gas burners) every 6 inches so wall moisture never traps behind closed loops. On C260 solid brass, avoid vinegar-smelling acetoxy cure silicone, which chemically tarnishes copper alloys; use oxime/alkoxy neutral-cure silicone or polyurethane construction adhesive outside burner hot zones. Bonds cleanly over primed plaster, drywall, or degreased ceramic tile.
- Pre-Drilled #8 Corner Screw Mounting
- We laser-pierce clean 0.177" clearance holes inset 5/8" from each corner (plus top and bottom centerline holes on panels 34" and wider) and supply matching solid brass or stainless #8 screws. Ideal over brick, uneven wainscoting, or behind commercial ranges where mechanical removal for gas-valve servicing is preferred.
Living C260 Unlacquered Brass Patina vs. #4 Brushed 304 Stainless Care
Solid C260 Cartridge Brass (70% copper, 30% zinc) is delivered completely free of synthetic clear lacquer, available in mill-reflective Unlacquered Brass or linear-grained Brushed Satin Brass. Factory clearcoats inevitably yellow, craze, and peel behind high-output gas burners where flue heat and cooking steam concentrate. Bare solid brass cannot peel: splatters wipe down with mild dish soap and hot water, gradually mellowing the splash zone into a warm amber-ochre living patina. Whenever a brighter uniform finish is desired, ten minutes with Bar Keepers Friend or Flitz polish along the horizontal grain restores the original satin luster.
For commercial-grade neutrality, our #4 Brushed 304 Stainless Steel is non-magnetic austenitic kitchen alloy (18% chromium, 8% nickel) finished with the same horizontal satin grain used on Wolf, Bluestar, and Viking range bodies. It is unaffected by acidic tomato, lemon, or vinegar splashes and wipes clean with warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth.
Frequently Asked Specification Questions
How accurately do I need to measure for a laser-cut electrical outlet opening?
Remove the existing wallplate and measure from the left edge of the backsplash zone to the horizontal center of the electrical box, and from the countertop up to the vertical center of the box, to the nearest 1/16 inch. Because a standard 2.75" × 4.50" single-gang wallplate overlaps our 2-3/8" × 3-13/16" laser aperture by 3/16" horizontally and 11/32" vertically on every side, you have forgiving ±1/8" installation tolerance while keeping every cut edge completely covered.
Can a 16-gauge solid brass or stainless backsplash be installed directly over existing tile?
Yes, provided the existing tile sits flat without proud decorative bullnose trim. Degrease the tile thoroughly with denatured alcohol or TSP substitute, rest the bottom edge of the 16-gauge panel directly on the countertop (or on 1/16" setting shims for a perimeter silicone joint), and bond with vertical beads of neutral-cure high-temperature silicone.
What if my range hood span is wider than 44 inches (such as a 48" commercial range)?
Our maximum single-sheet fabrication envelope is 44" × 30". For 48" or 60" ranges, designers either order a centered 36" or 44" vertical feature panel framed by field tile, or specify two book-matched 24" × 24" panels meeting at a precision-cut vertical butt joint aligned with the range centerline.
